How do you split a cell into multiple rows in Excel?
Split a cell into multiple rows in Excel. An easy way to do this would be to use the “text to columns” feature. Let’s learn through an example!
Tackling this task is a two-step process.
Excel is an electronic spreadsheet program.
An electronic spreadsheet is a computer software program that is used for storing, organizing and manipulating data.
In our example, we will need to do the following two things:
- Split the data using the text to columns feature
Here’s the data.
So, we want to split the data into first and last names, and then transpose these names from columns to rows
Let’s use the comma symbol as our “split point” for the data.
Step 1. Split the data using the text to columns feature
Highlight the data, go to the data tab, and click “text to columns”
*while the layout is a little different, these instructions are the exact same for a mac or windows operating system
In our example, let’s choose “delimited” data.
Next.
In my red box, we see a preview of how the data will be split
In the red square you’ll see our data is splitting correctly now.
Click finish!
Boom!
But now we need to “Transpose” the data into rows.
Step 2. Transpose the data
Highlight all our data and then click copy (or CTRL + C as a keyboard shortcut!).
Now move the active cell down A7 (or somewhere not in the copied region).
Click paste special -> and check the transpose box.
Click ok.
Now you should be a pro at splitting and transposing date like this!
Hope this helps!
